Wine Workshops

First Crush wine workshops are one-day classes held at the beautiful facilities at our new location at Silver Horse Winery.  Occasionally the workshops will be held at other locations depending upon the content of the class.  Each of our wine workshops will focus on a different component of viticulture and the winemaking process.   Each winemaking and viticulture segment of these fun and interactive classes will coincide with what is actually taking place in vineyards and wineries at the time they are held, allowing participants to take part in some of these "behind the scenes" events in the winemaking industry.

You can register and attend individual wine workshops or purchase one of our wine workshop packages, which includes admittance to four of our monthly wine workshops, as well one of our blending workshops.   You may sign up to join in the winemaking process and begin creating your first First Crush vintage anytime during the workshop series.

Viticulture Enology

February

Terroir II - The things you can (prior to planting) and how it impacts vineyard growth and development. Also learn how to plan the vineyard to compliment your site.

Winery and lab equipment.An introduction to the equipment and tools used to make wine.

March Pruning.   Evaluating vineyards for yield potential (from previous year's data) to determine pruning levels; reviewing quality information, how pruning affects crop load. Preparing to Blend - An overview of the considerations and decisions by the winemaker when deciding to blend.
April Bud Break - Getting your vines off to a good start.   This is a critical time in the vineyard.   New roots are forming, buds are breaking.   Learn what the important considerations and decisions are for this critical period. Roll out the Barrels - Learn how different types of oak impact wine development.   Includes a demonstration about the different types of oak, oak alternatives, toast levels.
May Irrigation scheduling techniques. Labeling your Wine - Learn about the rules, regulations, and design and printing considerations in labeling wine.
June Bloom Time - Fruit set, tissue sampling, fertility decisions, early yield estimates.   Shoot positioning. Bottling Decisions - Bottles, corks, and foils.
July Verasion - Berry development.   How berry characteristics influence wine quality. Buying fruit and working with growers.
August Preparing for Harvest - What growers are doing to get ready for the big day! Dealing with winemakers. Preparing for Harvest - What winemakers are doing to get ready for the big day! Dealing with growers.
